Closing Remarks at the 24th Induction Workshop for Diplomatic Personnel Involved in the Work of the OPCW

Closing Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Odette Melono Deputy Director-General of the OPCW

13 September 2024

Excellencies,
Distinguished delegates,

It is my pleasure to close the twenty-fourth Induction Workshop for Diplomatic Personnel Involved in the Work of the OPCW.

I wish to thank you all for your participation in this important event.

Your engagement today has been greatly appreciated, and I trust that the briefings have given you practical insights and contacts that will enhance your work as you contribute to the mission of the OPCW.

The information shared and the conversations held today reflect the collaborative spirit that has always underpinned the work of the OPCW.

As the presenters at this workshop have underscored, the world of chemical disarmament continues to evolve, and with it, the challenges we face.

One of the most serious challenges is keeping pace with the rapid advances in science and technology.

These developments, while offering potential for great benefit, also introduce complexities that require us to be vigilant and adaptable.

In response to these challenges, we are fortunate to have the Centre for Chemistry and Technology, the ChemTech Centre, which has now been operational for over a year.

This state-of-the-art facility is already demonstrating its high value to our Member States as a platform for training and research, using the most modern equipment.

It is a vital tool in our continued efforts to prevent the re-emergence of chemical weapons and promote the peaceful uses of chemistry.

I understand many of you will join the visit to the ChemTech Centre this afternoon.

You will be able to interact with the Secretariat experts who work there and learn more about how your countries can take full advantage of this tool.

As we look to the future, the collaboration between the Secretariat and Member States, as well as among Member States themselves, will be more important than ever.

The foundation of our success lies in this partnership, built on open communication, active participation, and a shared commitment to the goals of the Convention.

The Secretariat remains ready to assist and support you in your roles.

I look forward to continuing to work closely with each of you as we uphold the ban on chemical weapons and advance the peaceful applications of chemistry.

I am grateful for your attention and your commitment to the work of the OPCW.

With that, I wish to invite everyone to join me, your presenters, other senior OPCW staff, and all other participants for lunch in the Delegates Lounge.

Thank you.
