The Minister of State of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, The Rt Hon Baroness Anelay of St Johns, DBE today met the OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü at the OPCW Headquarters in The Hague.
Director-General recalled the invaluable contribution of the United Kingdom in the negotiations leading to the conclusion of the Chemical Weapons Convention and its steadfast and consistent support for the work of the OPCW. He briefed her on the progress made towards attaining the goals of the Convention, OPCW’s work in Syria and the on-going dialogue regarding the future priorities of the Organisation.
Baroness Anelay stated after the meeting that, “I am pleased to have visited the OPCW today and to have met with Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü. We discussed the vital work the OPCW is carrying out to rid the world of chemical weapons, including the investigations to address the ongoing use of toxic chemicals as weapons in Syria.”
The Rt Honourable Baroness Anelay’s delegation included H.E. Sir Geoffrey Adams, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the OPCW, Ms Rebecca Sagar, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the OPCW, and Beth Carson Assistant Private Secretary to Baroness Anelay.
