The Director-General of the OPCW, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, welcomed Angola’s deposit of an instrument of accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention on 16 September. Angola will become the 192nd State Party to the Convention on 16 October 2015.
“Angola’s accession, following so closely that of Myanmar, brings the Convention ever closer to becoming a completely universal treaty,” said Ambassador Üzümcü. “It comes at a time when the international community is actively working to strengthen this important global norm.”
“I hope that the few remaining countries outside the Convention – Egypt, Israel, North Korea and South Sudan – will follow suit quickly to join the global consensus against these terrible weapons,” said the Director-General.
