The OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü visited Astana, Kazakhstan from 3-5 May.
During his visit, the Director-General was received by the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, H.E. Mr Karim Massimov, and the Chairman of the Senate of Parliament, H.E. Mr Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He also had wide-ranging discussions on issues related to implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr Erlan Idrissov, Minister for Investment and Development, H.E. Mr Asset Issekeshov, Minister for Energy, H.E. Mr Vladimir Shkolnik, and the First Deputy Minister for Internal Affairs, H.E. Mr Marat Demeuov.
“Kazakhstan is an important partner for the OPCW, with strong credentials in disarmament and non-proliferation in a dynamic region,” said Ambassador Üzümcü.
The Director-General also visited the wastewater treatment plant in Astana and delivered a lecture on non-proliferation challenges related to chemical weapons at the Eurasian National University.
