The OPCW hosted the annual meeting of legal advisers of the United Nations system and related organisations on 6 and 7 May 2014 at the Technical Secretariat in The Hague.
In his welcoming remarks to the meeting the OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü, commended the tradition of holding the meeting annually and stressed the importance of cooperation between international organisations, even though their individual mandates are varied.
The United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, chaired the meeting and the OPCW was represented by its Legal Adviser, Mr. Olufemi Elias. Twenty Legal Advisers of UN specialized, related and other organisations participated, together with other legal staff.
The meeting’s agenda covered a wide range of issues of public international law, privileges and immunities of international organizations, and administrative law, and also addressed legal aspects of the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons.
