On 16 March, we remember the tragedy that befell the innocent citizens of Halabja. On this day 29 years ago, thousands suffered and perished in the unspeakable cruelty of a chemical weapons attack.
On behalf of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, I wish to convey to the authorities and inhabitants of the city of Halabja our deepest sympathies for the victims of this brutal attack.
As we pay tribute to the memory of the victims, we also remind ourselves that we must remain steadfast in our commitment to never let this happen again. A complete and effective ban on the production and use of chemical weapons is a fitting memorial to the victims who suffered at the hands of these abhorrent weapons. To ensure that future generations are forever spared the horror and suffering that occurred in Halabja, let us recommit ourselves to the complete elimination of chemical weapons from the world.
