The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, met the OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü today at the OPCW Headquarters in The Hague.
H.E. Nkoana-Mashabane underlined that “South Africa recognises that the work of the OPCW, coupled with full, effective and non-discriminatory implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention will contribute tremendously towards its universality and international peace and security.”
The Director-General praised South Africa’s contribution to the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), noting in particular the strong support of South Africa to the OPCW’s Africa Programme. The Director-General briefed H.E. Ms Nkoana-Mashabane on progress made towards the realisation of the goals of the Convention and the challenges that lay ahead. They discussed ways and means of further enhancing cooperation between the Organisation and South Africa and with regional organisations.
