A delegation of Members of the European Parliament, Ms Marietje Schaake and Ms Judith Sargentini, and their staff met today with the Director-General and senior OPCW officials at the OPCW’s headquarters in The Hague. They discussed ways of deepening cooperation between the OPCW and the European Parliament. The Director-General also provided an update on efforts to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons programme.
“The European Union is a vital partner for the OPCW and global efforts to eliminate chemical weapons. The European Parliament plays an especially important role in promoting effective implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention by setting best-practice legislative standards and reaching out to colleagues in other parliaments around the world.”
Ms Schaake said, “Today’s visit underlines our commitment to working to end the use of chemical weapons worldwide, and we support the role the OPCW plays to accomplish this goal. In the European Parliament we continue to push for efforts to end the terrible war in Syria, and in particular to ensure that anyone who has used chemical weapons is held accountable.”
