In cooperation with the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons of the State of Qatar, the OPCW held a seminar on the “Chemical Weapons Convention and Chemical Safety and Security Management” for OPCW Member States in the Asian Region, which took place on 10-12 September 2013 in Doha.
This was the third seminar of its kind, and the first to be held under the auspices of the Doha Regional Centre for CBRN Training. The seminar was attended by 68 participants from 20 Member States*.
The seminar was inaugurated by Major General Staff (Pilot) Nasser Mohammed Al-Ali, Chairman of the Qatari National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons (NCPW), with a special address made by Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins, Coordinator of Threat Reduction Programs at the US Department of State.
The seminar included presentations on the latest developments and best practices involved in chemical safety and chemical security management, as well as overviews of effective safety and security systems, case studies and lessons learned. The seminar brought together stakeholders representing National Authorities, chemical industries and industry associations, and legal experts. Participants had the opportunity to consider new approaches to chemical safety-and-security management and to share their experiences in ensuring the safe and secure handling of chemicals.
