Basic Course on Assistance and Protection for West African States Parties Held in Serbia

11 September 2012

The OPCW and Government of the Republic of Serbia jointly organised a Basic Course on Assistance and Protection against Chemical Weapons from 3 to 7 September 2012 that was held at the CBRN Training Centre of the Serbian Armed Forces in Kruševac.

The course took place under the auspices of the OPCW’s Programme to Strengthen Cooperation with Africa with financial support from the Government of Norway. Participants from Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone attended. The course was part of an assistance and protection initiative for the West African sub-region that was launched at a planning meeting in Accra, Ghana in 2011.

The course aims to establish and develop emergency response capabilities by training trainers of national emergency response agencies from countries in the sub-region, as well as to lay the groundwork for future regional networking in this field. It highlighted once again the assistance offered by the OPCW and Serbia to States Parties in accordance with the provisions of Article X of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
