Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü visited Berlin on 7 November 2011 for consultations at the Federal Foreign Office and high-level meetings with ministerial officials. He met with Dr. Emily Haber, State Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; with Dr. Karl-Ernst Brauner, Head of the Foreign Trade Department, Ministry of Economics and Technology; and with Ambassador Rolf Nikel, Commissioner of the Federal Government for Arms Control and Disarmament.
The Director-General expressed his appreciation to the officials for the support given by the Government of Germany in enabling a team of OPCW inspectors to visit Libya last week to verify the integrity of its declared chemical weapons stockpiles. He provided them an update on issues related to implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention including, inter alia, the 2012 deadline for completing destruction of existing chemical weapons stockpiles, and future priorities of the OPCW.
He commended Germany for its strong commitment to the Convention and its support for the work of the OPCW. His interlocutors assured the Director-General of Germany’s continued commitment to the work of the Organisation.
