On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the establishment of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Hon. Rohitha Bogollagama M.P. conveyed a message of congratulations to the OPCW and its Director-General Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter.
Foreign Minister Bogollagama in his message stated that “As a pioneer State Party to the CWC, Sri Lanka is proud to note that 182 State Parties have become party to the Convention which is approaching the goal of universality. We are hopeful that these deadly weapons would be eliminated as stipulated in the Convention to make the world a safer place for future generations. Further, Sri Lanka as a country active on counter terrorism extends its fullest cooperation to prevent these deadly weapons from falling into the hands of terrorist organizations.”
Foreign Minister Bogollagama in his message further stated that “I would like to assure you that Sri Lanka is fully committed to the objectives of the Convention, and is in the process of enacting legislation to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention this year.”
Foreign Minister Bogollagama also conveyed his Government’s appreciation to the OPCW Director-General for his contribution and guidance to the Technical Secretariat, in achieving this progress.
