On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Entry into Force of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the founding of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), H.E. Ms Antoinette Batumubwira, the Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation of the Republic of Burundi sent a congratulatory message to the OPCW and its Director-General, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter.

Minister Batumubwira stated in her message that “On the occasion of the Tenth Anniversary of the entry into force of the CWC, I have the honour to extend to you, on behalf of the government and Republic of Burundi, my warm and sincere congratulations.”

Minister Batumubwira message noted that “the States Parties to the Convention will have observed and understood with satisfaction that the implementation of this unique multilateral instrument, the purpose of which is complete disarmament, is directly in-line with globalisation, where everything is transparent and must be done openly. Thanks to the multiple inspections which you have conducted, that is no longer a dream but a reality. Through the training programmes which you provide and the meetings which you periodically organise in the Member States, there is no need to point out that, both from a quantitative and a qualitative point of view, these actions are synonymous with the resounding successes of the OPCW.”

Minister Batumubwira reiterated that her country “Burundi, will not cease to honour in dynamic fashion its commitments to the CWC, and I can assure you now that it will not be very long before promulgation of a law implementing the CWC will take place.”

Furthermore, the message encourages the OPCW to continue with its “noble mission of encouraging even more of those States which have not signed the CWC to join our ranks, so that the universality of the CWC might become effective”.
