On 26 January, 2006 H.E Mr Mohammed Bedjaoui, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, visited the headquarters of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.
The OPCW Director-General, Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, welcomed Foreign Minister Bedjaoui and discussed with him the present status of the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) by the 175 OPCW Member States.
Foreign Minister Bedjaoui reiterated Algeria’s full and continuing commitment to a total ban on chemical weapons and its firm support of the OPCW’s mandate to both eliminate these weapons, as well as to ensure that they never re-appear.
In his meeting with the Director-General, Foreign Minister Bedjaoui stressed there is an urgent need to address the threat of terrorism by supporting the OPCW’s efforts to achieve the Convention’s universal and effective implementation to ensure that these dangerous materials cannot be acquired and used by terrorists.
On behalf of the Organisation, Director-General Pfirter expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Algeria for its active support for the work of the OPCW.
