10 November 2005

On 10 November 2005, the Tenth Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention, which is convening in The Hague from 7 to 11 November 2005, has unanimously approved the renewed appointment of Ambassador Rogelio Pfirter, Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The decision to re-appoint Director-General Pfirter for one further term of four years, beginning on 25 July 2006 and ending on 24 July 2010, was supported by acclamation.

All regional groups, including the African, Asian, Eastern European, Latin American and Caribbean, and the Western European and Other groups, as well as the Non-Aligned Movement, expressed their full support for Director-General Pfirter’s re-appointment.

Ambassador Pfirter, a lawyer and an Argentine career diplomat, was initially appointed to the post of OPCW Director-General on 25 July 2002.

The Chairman of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention, Ambassador José Antonio Arróspide, Permanent Representative of Peru to the OPCW, congratulated Director-General Pfirter on his renewed appointment and underscored the Conference’s support for his leadership and management expertise, which has been a vital factor in ensuring the continuous expansion of the Organisation’s membership and the enhancement of its ability to effectively implement the global chemical weapons ban.

Ambassador Arróspide noted that, under Director-General Pfirter’s administration, twenty-nine States had joined the Chemical Weapons Convention and over one hundred Member States had received focused support to enable these countries to fully apply the Convention in their territories.
