Pacific Islands Workshop on the Chemical Weapons Convention Commences in Fiji

7 June 2002

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), in conjunction with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, is conducting a regional workshop on the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in Nadi, Fiji, from 10 to 11 June 2002. The workshop is being held to coincide with the meeting of the Forum Regional Security Meeting, which begins on 12 June.

All 16 Member States of the Pacific Islands Forum, as well as political and legal representatives of regional organisations, have been invited to attend the CWC workshop. This workshop will concentrate on issues related to procedures for joining and implementing the Convention, as well as providing insight into the economic, trade and security benefits of joining the OPCW.

The OPCW is grateful for the generous financial contributions provided by Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom that have enabled this regional workshop to take place, thereby promoting universal adherence to the Convention.
